Understanding Electrolyte Filling of Lithium‐Ion Battery Electrodes on the Pore Scale Using the Lattice Boltzmann Method

Electrolyte filling is a time-critical step during battery manufacturing that also affects performance. The underlying physical phenomena mainly occur on the pore scale and are hard to study experimentally. Therefore, here, lattice Boltzmann method used of realistic 3D lithium-ion cathodes. flow through nanoporous binder modelled adequately. Besides process time, influences particle size, distribution, volume fraction wetting behavior active material investigated. Optimized conditions discussed by pressure-saturation relationships. It shown how influencing factors affect electrolyte saturation. amount distribution entrapped residual gas analyzed in detail. Both can adversely results indicate process, final saturation, performance be optimized adapting parameters as well electrode design.
